Arbeitssicherheit in Pflegeberufen

Occupational safety for care professions: A nudge for healthier hands for our caregivers. Our nudge aims to remind caregivers of the importance of skincare and encourage the regular use of hand care products. Through simple reminders, we want to raise awareness of the risks of poor skin care and thus improve working conditions in the long term

What does the topic mean?

Skin diseases pose a considerable risk in the care sector. Frequent washing and disinfecting hands often leads to dry skin, which in turn, leads to eczema and other diseases such as neurodermitis. As early as the first year of training, 27% of nursing staff develop eczema on their hands. In view of the high shortage of skilled workers, something urgently needs to change

Goal of the nudge

Are you working as a caregiver or holding a leadership position in a care facility? Then we want to reach out to you to achieve our goal of spreading knowledge about the potential risks of inadequate prioritization of skincare and to reduce the incidence of skin disease as much as possible.

    Needs analysis

    • High Incidence of Skin Diseases in Nursing Professions -> The constant exposure of the skin to water, chemical substances, and the frequent (and sometimes incorrect) use of gloves are generally the causes for the development of skin diseases.
    • General Crisis in Nursing Professions -> An increasing number of people in need of care, but too few qualified nursing professionals.

    Cause analysis

    • Temporal Discounting:

The preventive use of hand cream during breaks and after shifts does not show immediate results, which can lead to neglect of long-term consequences. We aim to counteract this and raise awareness among caregivers about health.

    • Overconfidence:

The reminders are also intended to counteract overconfidence, such as thoughts like "That won't happen to me." We aim to remind caregivers in nursing homes of the importance of skincare

Target Group

In general, our target group includes people who work in professions that require frequent hand sanitization or washing and regular glove use. This is particularly true for employees in nursing homes and hospitals, as well as individuals in leadership positions. Additionally, our target group includes anyone responsible for organizational tasks, such as creating hygiene plans.

Added value of the nudge

  • Contribution to work safety in nursing profession.

  • Higher prioritization of skin care, spreading awareness about risks and possible diseases.

  • Potentially mitigating the shortage of skilled workers in the healthcare sector
