GenderGuard

GenderGuard

Our nudge is a “gender bias check” with supervisor notification. This means: An AI-based tool automatically checks every new job advertisement for gender-coded language. If a gender bias is detected, the job advertisement is forwarded to the line manager with a note and wording suggestions before it is published.

What does the topic mean?

Our topic is gender discrimination in job postings within IT recruiting. IT job advertisements often unknowingly include male-coded terms that may discourage potential female applicants. Recruiters tend to use these terms out of habit or lack of awareness.

Goal of the nudge

Reduce discrimination and exclusion of women in IT recruiting by making managers actively responsible for recognizing and avoiding gender-coded language in job advertisements.

    Needs analysis

    • 13.4 % IT job advertisements are discriminatory (gender-coded language).
    • Male-coded terms such as “assertive” discourage women from applying.
    • Managers routinely tolerate gender bias (unconscious bias, cognitive overload, in-group bias) → automatic toleration persists.

    Cause analysis

    • Unconscious Gender Bias

Language can be unconsciously male-dominated, for example
through terms such as “assertive” or “competitive”. They often do not match the self
description of many women and therefore have an exclusionary effect.

    • Cognitive Overload

In everyday life, there is often a lack of time or mental focus to check
      texts thoroughly for bias.

    • In-group Bias

In male-dominated management positions, this leads to job advertisements
that only appeal to men because they “fit into the team”.

Target Group

The nudge is aimed at managers in IT recruiting who regularly release gender-coded job
advertisements.

Added value of the nudge

  • The nudge helps managers in IT recruiting to recognize and avoid gender bias in job
advertisements. This promotes diversity, attracts more suitable applicants and
    strengthens the employer brand.
