CultureSTRONG

CultureSTRONG

Our Nudge is an annual plaque awarded to cultural institutions for their active commitment to combating the abuse of power. It is presented at an event or by mail, but is not permanent and must be renewed annually. This creates a continuous incentive for long-term commitment. The Nudge relies on recognition, visibility, and positive social pressure.

What does the topic mean?

Abuse of power in the cultural sector describes systematic or recurring cases in which individuals – often in leadership positions – exploit their power to disadvantage, manipulate, or harm others. These patterns are often tolerated or inadequately punished by institutions. Our nudge aims to address precisely this problem and strengthen institutional accountability.

Goal of the nudge

The goal of the nudge is to motivate cultural institutions to actively, systematically, and
transparently counter abuse of power. The plaque is intended to be a symbol of credible commitment and provide incentives for sustainable structural change. At the same time, it increases public pressure on the institutions to take a visible stand.

    Needs analysis

    • In recent years, the cultural sector has made it clear through numerous cases (e.g., #MeToo) that there are systemic problems in the way power is handled. Many institutions are merely reacting reactively and defensively. Positive incentives for structural change are lacking. The memorial plaque creates such an incentive – public, transparent, and effective.

    Cause analysis

    • Inhibiting behavioral patterns such as status quo thinking, peer protection, and image
anxiety lead institutions to avoid change or cover up misconduct. Our nudge specifically
focuses on reputational incentives such as recognition and public visibility to break these
      biases and encourage active engagement.

Target Group

The target group includes cultural institutions such as theaters, museums, orchestras,
production houses, and festivals – i.e., organizations with structural responsibility in the
cultural sector. Supporting structures (foundations, municipalities, etc.) are also indirectly
addressed.

Added value of the nudge

  • The nudge ensures positive visibility of genuine commitment, strengthens trust within and
outside the institution, and creates a public incentive for structural change. Clear, annual
award criteria ensure transparency and guidance.
