Burnout costs – nudging protects

Burnout costs - nudging protects

Information nudge for burnout prevention in companies through regular calendar impulses for managers. A short, gentle reminder in Outlook is intended to alert managers to burnout risks in the team and motivate them to take countermeasures in good time.

What does the topic mean?

Our topic “Recognizing misconduct and reacting appropriately” aims to place reliable signals directly in everyday working life so that managers can identify and address structural burnout risks at an early stage. Factors such as the intensity and duration of the workload, low decision-making autonomy for complex tasks and a lack of a sense of community in the working environment lead to employees becoming mentally burnt out, emotionally exhausted and increasingly distanced from their work over a longer period of time. This is precisely where our nudge comes in, by establishing a brief, unobtrusive reminder in the manager’s daily routine and thus sharpening awareness of critical risk signals.

Goal of the nudge

We want to support companies in reducing psychological stress in the workplace and limiting the economic damage caused by burnout by creating awareness, promoting reflection and providing impetus for action. In the short term, the aim is to raise awareness of critical factors such as excessive overtime and lack of recognition and, in the long term, to establish a sustainable culture of care.

    Needs analysis

    • Rising sickness burden
Since 2014, sick days due to mental illness have risen by almost 50%.
    • Economic costs
In 2022, the economy will lose an estimated € 27 to 42 billion in added value due to the increasing burden of illness.
    • Working environment
Burnout is primarily caused by the amount of work, intensity, low decision-making autonomy, lack of recognition and lack of a sense of community.

    Cause analysis

    • Status-quo-Bias

Managers tend to maintain established work processes and unconsciously ignore warning signals.

    • Omission Bias

Failure to react to the first signs of overload is perceived as less problematic than active mistakes.

    • Attribution of blame

In society, mental illnesses such as burnout are often attributed to character predispositions and not to structural causes.

Target Group

• Managers at all levels in companies

• Affected employees who show the first signs of overload

• Personnel and HR departments that administer and support the system

Added value of the nudge

  • Prevention

Early intervention reduces burnout and increases well-being.

  • Cost savings

Fewer absences due to illness significantly reduce absence-related costs.

  • Cultural change

Regular, positive impulses strengthen community and personal responsibility.
